Make a Korea allergy plan before choosing restaurants

For a Korea trip with a diagnosed food allergy, prepare with your clinician and use restaurant questions to support that plan, not replace it.

This page is a travel communication checklist, not diagnosis, treatment, legal or financial advice. The NHS food allergy guidance, reviewed in August 2026, explains that an allergy specialist provides an action plan and advises checking ingredients and informing restaurant and airline staff. Its UK emergency number is not the number to use in Korea.

Before departure, discuss your specific avoidance needs, prescribed emergency medication and how to respond to a reaction with your clinician. Keep the plan accessible to a travel companion. This article does not choose medication, doses or a list of foods to eliminate.

Ask two separate questions at a restaurant in Korea

In Korea, ask both whether the allergen is an ingredient and whether it can contact the meal during preparation.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's allergy guidance warns that even small amounts on utensils and dishes can cause symptoms. A dish name, photograph or request to remove a topping therefore does not answer every relevant question.

QuestionDetails to ask aboutIf the answer is unclear
Is my allergen in the meal?Base ingredients, broth, sauces, seasoning, garnish and sidesAsk whether the kitchen can check the complete preparation
Can it contact the meal during cooking or serving?Shared utensils, pans, grills, preparation surfaces and serving equipmentDo not interpret “we remove the topping” as an answer about preparation

The table is an editorial conversation aid, not a kitchen audit. The UK Food Standards Agency’s 2025 research distinguishes information about intentional ingredients from information about allergen controls during preparation. We use that general distinction here, not the report’s UK legal rules or survey results as claims about Korea. Explain the actual allergen rather than only saying “I have allergies.” A polite yes from someone who has not checked the kitchen is not enough information to settle your requirements.

Prepare a checked bilingual message for Korea

For Korea restaurant communication, a short bilingual message should name your exact allergen and ask the kitchen about the whole meal.

Use this original English draft as a starting point, complete it accurately, and have a competent Korean speaker check its translation before relying on it. It is not a medically validated card:

I have a food allergy to [exact allergen or allergens]. This is an allergy, not a taste preference. Does this dish contain any of these ingredients, including in its broth, sauces, seasonings, toppings or side dishes? Can you check with the kitchen how it is prepared and whether it may contact these allergens through shared equipment? If you cannot confirm, please tell me before I order.

Keep the final text available offline, with the allergen clearly visible. Avoid adding a long medical history that distracts from the kitchen's question. Do not post your health documents, passport or personal contact details in public restaurant reviews or the Koreary community. Share only necessary information directly with the relevant staff or medical professionals.

Use a backup meal when the Korea kitchen cannot confirm

At a Korean restaurant, an unresolved ingredient or preparation question is a reason to choose another option, not to test the meal.

Our planning suggestion is to identify a primary option and a backup along each day's route. Contact the exact branch when advance discussion is needed, and repeat the check on arrival rather than treating an old menu image as current evidence. A recommendation from another traveler may help locate a venue but cannot establish suitability for your allergy.

For packaged food, check the current product information against your needs. If you cannot understand it, seek reliable assistance rather than guessing from the front image. This guide does not summarize Korean allergen-label law or claim that any label list covers every possible allergy. Plant-based claims and religious certification answer different questions from your individual allergy requirements.

Use 119 for a medical emergency in Korea

In Korea, call 119 for a medical emergency, including a suspected serious allergic reaction.

KTO's official emergency guidance lists 119 for medical emergencies. If you cannot make the call, ask someone nearby to call and provide your location. Do not wait for a restaurant to resolve an ingredient question or for an online appointment reply.

Follow your prescribed emergency plan. KDCA advises immediate use of prescribed self-injectable epinephrine when anaphylaxis symptoms occur and urgent emergency care, even if symptoms improve afterward. This page cannot determine the severity of your symptoms. It provides no replacement for emergency assessment.

Food allergy questions for Korea travelers

These Korea travel answers clarify the limits of menu descriptions, translations and online recommendations.

Can this guide recommend an allergy-safe restaurant?

No. No kitchen, menu item or product has been assessed here for your allergy. Contact the exact venue and follow your clinician's plan.

Is removing a visible ingredient enough?

Do not assume so. Confirm the complete preparation and possible contact with the allergen, not only what is visible on the plate.

Can I rely on an automatic translation?

Use translation as an aid, not a guarantee of accurate communication. Have your completed message checked and ask staff to confirm the kitchen's answer.

Where can I find ordinary medical appointment information?

Use the linked clinic and pharmacy guide for official contact routes. Do not substitute an ordinary appointment request for emergency help.
