Seoul Palaces: Plan Your Visit, Tickets & Reservations

Published 2026-10-04 · Updated 2026-10-04 · Koreary editorial

Traditional palace architecture in Seoul

Choose a palace day around closure rules and the experience you want, then keep ordinary admission, garden visits and special evening events separate.

Choose one main palace first

For a first visit, make one palace the anchor of a half day rather than rushing through several entrances. Leave space for courtyards, rest stops and a nearby meal. If photography matters, allow extra time without treating quiet residential lanes as an extension of the attraction.

Check the closure day before building the route

KTO lists Gyeongbokgung’s regular closure on Tuesday and Changdeokgung’s on Monday, with holiday exceptions. Confirm the calendar for your date. Seasonal hours and final admission also matter: a palace being open that day does not mean you can arrive shortly before closing and see everything.

A useful order is: choose your visit date, check the official calendar, decide which ticket or session you need, and only then book surrounding activities. Keep an indoor alternative in your plan if weather makes a long outdoor visit uncomfortable.

Three different booking questions

The announced autumn 2026 Gyeongbokgung night-viewing season ran from 2 September through 2 October. It has ended as of this article’s 4 October review. Do not book a trip assuming that the same event continues throughout autumn.

Should you rent hanbok?

Choose a rental because you want the experience. Check the palace’s current clothing eligibility rules before assuming free entry, and include the rental charge, changing time, deposit conditions and return deadline in your decision. Admission savings alone do not tell you whether a rental is good value.

For a group, agree on a meeting point outside the busiest photo areas. Comfortable footwear and a manageable bag can make the visit easier even if you dress up.

Pair the palace with a considerate neighborhood walk

If adding Bukchon, KTO lists restricted visitor hours of 10:00–17:00 in the designated area. Follow local signs, keep voices low and respect private doors. Plan your palace and meal times so you do not reach restricted lanes after visitor hours.

Save the exact palace entrance and your reservation confirmation before leaving your accommodation. Our seven-day Seoul itinerary is a starting point; move its palace day to suit the actual operating calendar.
